‘I killed my brother, got me arrested’: Unemployed man falsely confesses to murder to get square meal in jail

In a shocking incident, a man appeared before the police at Bansdroni station in south Kolkata late in the night and gave a false statement of his brother’s murder.

According to the police, the incident took place in Niranjan Palli of Bansdroni. The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Debashish Chakraborty. Here he lived in a small house with his brother Shubhashish. Debashish and Shubhashi’s mother was an employee of the Ceramic Institute in Jadavpur. His father had already died. After retirement, the mother got a pension of 35 thousand rupees. The eldest son of the family, Debashish, used to work in the same company. But while working, his eyes got worse. As a result, even though he could not work, he got a pension of Rs 15,000 per month. Younger son Shubhashish used to work in Malda. He is unemployed since 2017.

The mother and her two sons were earning Rs 50,000. They used to rent a flat at Sonali Park in Bansdroni, South Kolkata. The pension was stopped after his mother’s death last May. Both the brothers left the flat and rented a small house in Niranjan Palli for Rs 15,000 to support the family. He could not cook himself properly. He used to spend his day eating dry food. Shubhashish claimed that his grandfather was also not in good health. A few days ago, Debashish told his brother that he would not live long. The pension of Rs 15,000 will also be stopped after his death. Shubhashi will have no money to live and eat. But after the death of the elder brother he went to the police station and said that he had killed his elder brother thinking that if he was arrested for murder, he would not be denied food and shelter when he went to jail. If he is sentenced to life imprisonment, he will be able to eat and live at the expense of the government for the rest of his life.
