‘I Don’t Believe A Wicketkeeper Should Be Captain’: Shane Warne Names His Choice For India’s Next Test Captain

Legendary spinner Shane Warne feels that a wicketkeeper should not be the captain as he named his choice for India’s next Test captain. Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captaincy after India’s 1-2 series loss to South Africa which stunned the cricketing world. The BCCI is yet to announce Kohli’s successor, but there are many players whose names are in the news for taking over the reins of India’s Test team. Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul are considered to be the frontrunners for this post.

Warne, who is very vocal about his opinion, said that a wicketkeeper should not be the captain as he had picked either Rohit or Bumrah to lead India’s Test team.

“I do not believe that a wicketkeeper (Rishabh Pant) should be the captain, I believe that a wicketkeeper makes a good deputy, a good vice-captain. Looking at the Indian side, Jasprit Bumrah can make a good captain, Rohit Sharma can make a good captain,” Warne told ANI.

The spin great said that Rohit is the favorite to lead India’s Test side but if Ajinkya Rahane returns to form on time, he can challenge for the position as well.

“Rohit has done a good job in the shorter formats, so he will be the favorite to lead the team. KL Rahul could have done it, I would love to say Rahane but he has lost form, if Rahane was in form or if he finds that form again, he can do it.

“He is a very good captain, India are lucky to have so many options but I think Rohit will get the captaincy,” he said.

The 52-year-old further praised former captain Virat Kohli and said that he is saddened by his decision to step down as India’s Test captain.

“Virat is an inspiration to so many people, he is an inspirational leader and I feel sad to see him resign and step down as captain. He is still playing Test cricket and he still believes that it is the number one form of the game.

“He will still be playing Test cricket for a long time and I am looking forward to seeing him play the longest format. I am a big fan of his,” Warne said.
