Hyderabad’s Nalsar University has created gender neutral space

For the first time, Hyderabad-based National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (Nalsar) University has created a gender-neutral space exclusively to foster an inclusive student community. In a series of tweets, the university announced that one of the academic blocks on campus will now have rooms and washrooms specially designed for students who identify themselves with the LGBTQ+ community.

“Nalsar believes in inclusive education. I had involved students in my administration and their creative ideas have helped me come up with many progressive, liberal and futuristic policies. Individuals belonging to LGBTQ+ or gender and sexual minorities will have the same rights, privileges and facilities as the rest of the students,” said Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor of Nalsar University.

The university also plans to set up a gender-neutral hostel in due course. Several such initiatives are likely to come soon as university officials draft a new policy that will address the concerns of the LGBTQ+ community. This would include sensitizing its teaching and non-teaching staff and student body organizations about the discrimination faced by them.

Efforts at this major university to develop an inclusive campus began in 2015 when a BA LLB student, who did not wish to be identified by any gender, was given a letter with the neutral prefix “MX” instead of Mr. or Miss. Graduation certificate was given.

Since then, the university has come out with an interim trans policy that outlines that students’ official records should no longer be labeled based on gender or any other kind of prefix. Instead, a self-attested letter will be the only document for classifying the students on the basis of their choice. Further, the policy also states that the self-declaration forms shall not be shared with any third party including parents under any circumstances without the consent of the students.

Furthermore, no student can be forced to follow a gender-based dress code. Other policies include adequate representation of gender and sexual minorities in all departments. The committee that drafted the trans policy also suggested that the categories of male and female hostel representatives should be replaced with “residence representatives”, in addition to a special student body allocated to representing the LGBQ+ community. should go.
