On 25 August 2007, there were double explosions in the city. Visitors at the Lesserium at Lumbini Park near Secretariat and customers enjoying breakfast at Gokul Chaat Bhandar House were targeted by Indians mujahideen Terrorist operatives with Improvised Explosive Device (IED). 44 people lost their lives and 68 others were injured in these blasts.
Eleven years after the blasts, two IM henchmen- MD Akbar Ismail Choudhary and Aneeq Shafiq Saeed were sentenced to death, while the third convict Tariq Anjumi In 2018, a local court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Gokul Chaat was closed on Wednesday in honor of those who lost their lives. Syed Rahim (70) of Saidabad, who lost an eye in the blast at Gokul Chaat Bhandar, paid tribute to the victims who lost their lives at the eatery.
“I had gone to Gokul Chat to buy kulfi for my daughter, who was waiting outside in an auto. Just as I was about to approach the seller, there was an explosion and I lost one eye. I had received Rs 5 lakh for medical expenses. I need Rs 50,000 every year to replace the prosthetic eye. My wife is lying on the bed. I am going round the collectorate. I was assured that I would get a house from the government, but it has not happened yet. I appeal to the government to allot me a house and provide a job to my son,” Rahim told TOI.
K Chander Naik, 31, a tribal from Nalgonda district, was 19 when he lost one eye in an IED blast in Gokul Chaat. “I was following” B.Com And now I have two master’s degrees. Before the pandemic, I used to teach children to operate computers, but currently I am unemployed. I have contacted government officials and ministers for employment, but nothing has happened so far. I was advised to prepare for competitive exams but due to eye problem I am not able to concentrate for more than few hours. I am married and we have two children. I hope the government will give relief in the form of employment,” said Chander, president of the Terrorist Bomb Blast Victims Association.
