Amit Khatri, a 17-year-old resident of Ismaila village in the district, who brought laurels to the country, is returning to the village on Wednesday. Amit has won a silver medal in the 10 meter race walk in the Under-20 category at the World Athlete Championships held in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. He had reached Delhi airport on Tuesday evening. Today, the players of Delhi’s academy will welcome him first, then a welcome program will be held at Dr. Lalit Bhanot Athlete Academy in Bahadurgarh. In the afternoon, Amit will be welcomed with drums and drums in his village Ismaila. The confectioners have also reached the village in the morning itself. Tents have also been put up.

This is Amit’s journey
Talking about Amit’s sporting journey, it has been a struggle. Amit started the practice of walking on the streets of the village six years ago in 2014 at the age of 11. After this he went to Dr. Lalit Bhanot Athlete Academy in Bahadurgarh. Stayed here for one and a half years, but due to lack of resources in this academy, Amit could not be focused. In 2016, he went to NIS Patiala with a young man from his village, but there too no one paid attention to teaching. He then reached Jaipur Academy in 2017 with Sapna Poonia (Olympian), an athlete from Patiala who is serving as an Inspector in Rajasthan Police. He tried to teach Amit something, but due to his job, he had to leave the game. He recommended sending Amit back there and focusing on him through senior player Chandan Singh in Patiala. In November 2017, Amit again moved to Patiala. After three years of wandering from one state to another, Amit’s practice started right in the beginning of 2018.

In 2018 the record of 1990 was broken in the under-16
Amit played the first match in 2018. In the 5000 meter National Under-16 walk held in Ooty in May, Amit broke the 1990 record and completed it in 21 minutes 17 seconds, which was earlier 21 minutes 56 seconds. Amit’s game got a new flight after getting the gold medal here. In May 2019, he won the bronze medal by completing the Under-18 10,000 meter walk in 43 minutes 37 seconds. In the Junior National Athlete Under 16 held in November this year, he broke his own record of 2018 by completing 5000 meters walk in 20 minutes 27 seconds and won the gold medal. In the International Walking Championship held in Ranchi in February 2020, Amit participated in the Under-20 category and broke the 2018 record set by the player of India and won the gold medal. In this 10,000 meter competition, Amit completed the record of 40 minutes 48 seconds of Punjab’s Akshaydeep in 40 minutes 27 seconds. In the Junior Federation Under-20 held in Bhopal in January-February 2021, he won the gold medal by completing 10,000 meters walk in 40 minutes 40 seconds. After this, Gold in Junior Under-18 in Guwahati, Gold in 10 meters held in Sangrur, Punjab in May and qualified for World Championship.

Amit missed the world championship by just 7 seconds, there was a mistake in the timing of catching the water bottle, Amit missed the gold by just 7 seconds in this world championship held in the recent match. Actually, Amit did not get much time to adapt himself to the weather there. During the game, he missed the catch of a water bottle twice. At this point he had to step up his game, at which point he went to get a bottle of water. Because of this, he missed the distance by 7 seconds and won the silver medal.

Amit is the younger of two brothers, father is in BSF Havildar Amit’s father Suresh Kumar is Havildar in BSF. Amit has an elder brother, Sumit, who is preparing for a government exam. Mother Pramila is a housewife. Uncle Ramesh’s 16-year-old daughter Tamannaah is a national player of Kabaddi. Tamannaah’s 12-year-old younger brother Anshu has been selected in Khelo India. Tau Dharamsingh is retired from the army as Naib Subedar.
