How to involve children in other activities to reduce screen time and protect their eyes?

“I miss the good old busy mornings of packing lunch, tying my daughter’s hair, nagging my son to get ready on time, and dropping them off at the bus stop. What turns it all on is the screen. “Lunch boxes come in the form of meals served on study tables, staring at gadgets,” says lifestyle blogger and stylist Divya Singh Vishwanath.

But what is the solution? School is online and so are submissions, extra classes and social activities. It’s worrying, but Divya suggests some fun ways to reduce screen-time:

Board games: get some that kids will find interesting, as kids of all ages enjoy them and there are plenty available; Something is sure to be done. It is best to include them in choosing. You can also teach them some card games or tricks.

Art: Works great even if neither of you are artistic. You can also make board games like snakes-ladders and knots and crosses at home. It completely gets the kids excited and away from the screen. Try papier-mâché or pottery or simple paint and paper. Mandala art books are a great idea. Even if nothing comes out of craft sessions, you and your kids have a lot of fun and that’s what counts.

Riddle: Kids of all ages love puzzles and every possible puzzle is available online.

to Cook: Cooking and cleaning up dinner or an evening snack can be part of a family activity. Your meal will be delicious, it’s time for good bonding, kids will learn about nutrition, you’ll keep them away from the screen and the meal will be over without any hassle.

Dance: How to do a little workout before bedtime? And what better way to do this than with a quick dance! It is fun and good exercise.

Reading Time: Ask your children to read daily. It’s great fun discussing the story later. Change a scenario in the book and ask them to add to the story. If the book isn’t there, give them any situation and ask them to build a story around it. You will be amazed by the ideas they bring.

Make study fun Life is boring for them due to the lockdown. Make studies fun, I taught my kids simple addition and subtraction by playing snakes and ladders. We wrote letters and made words on the rocks; A box of dice was used to do math totals; Word blocks were used to form sentences; One candy for each paragraph written; Words after a small picture; Representation of a story/essay through a picture. It’s tough but you will manage.

a routine: This is very important for children and adults (with some flexibility of course). In my experience, a wake-up time and a bedtime are a good start.

It is good for their health, their energy gets depleted and they sleep well. If nothing is possible, be innovative. Hide the puzzle pieces around the house and ask them to find it and do everything without stopping. It’s also a good idea to do treasure hunts around the house. So you have to climb the stairs. Just some examples.

Conversation: talk to them. Share how your day went and ask them to do the same. Nothing builds a better bond than talking and listening. Ask their thoughts on some of the decisions you need to make. It’s nice to hear their thoughts and opinions on things and situations.
