Windows 11 lets you change your default apps, and here’s how you can change the default web browser on the new Microsoft OS.
Microsoft is bringing a completely refreshed UI to its users with an overall minimalist design. The new design will include a centered taskbar and windows with rounded corners, but all is not good, as Microsoft has made it extremely difficult to pick up your browser by keeping Edge as the default option.
Every time you try to open a link after downloading a third party browser on Windows 11, a pop-up will pop up asking you how you want to open the link. Now, in case you are wondering, it will work just like it did on Windows 10. So, let’s burst the bubble. This won’t be easy unless you have checked the ‘Always use this app’ option box. If you fail to do so, each resulting link will open in Microsoft Edge and you will never see the pop-up again, even if you specifically try to use a third party browser.
Microsoft isn’t exactly anti-competitive, as you can still find ways to use Google Chrome as a default browser, but it’s not as easy as it used to be. The way it works on Windows 11 is different, with the major web browsers prompting you to open the Default Apps section of Settings, where you’ll need to select your web browser of choice to use for each file type. To get to this settings page yourself, simply go to Settings followed by Apps & Default apps.
The Verge also tested browsers like Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Brave and Vivaldi on Windows 11, where only Firefox managed to change all the options automatically. Considering Microsoft’s reputation, Edge is a really good browser, but it looks like Microsoft is trying to convince users by forcing them to use it. Well, it’s a way to onboard users but it sure seems like a greedy move.
