How Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College shaped KK’s musical career

Singer-composer Krishnakumar Kunath, fondly known as KK, has left behind an unparalleled musical legacy that he has built upon his near three-decade-long career in music. He started his musical journey at an early age. He was also a part of a band during his college days. he studied in Delhi UniversityKirori Mal College.

KK had secured its admission under the Extracurricular Activity (ECA) quota, which allows adept students from various artistic fields to take admission in DU. As reported by a leading news daily, he not only secured his entry into commerce through special quota but also topped the ECA list of that year.

A drummer and vocalist of KMC’s erstwhile band Horizon, KK soon became a sensation in DU’s music circles. Julius Packiam, who later became a popular musician, was also part of this band along with KK. He completed college and moved to Mumbai to pursue his professional music career.

Initially, he sang several commercials before rising to fame with ‘Chhod Aaye Hum’ from Gulzar’s 1996 directorial debut. Three years later, Keke got his first album, Keke and there was no looking back after that. KK sang many Bollywood The songs were part of almost every film album that followed in the late 2000s.

His versatility and ability to sing every genre of song with equal finesse separated him from other playback singers in the industry. He is known for delivering hits like Tadap Tadap (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam), Dus Bahane (Dus), Tu Jo Mila (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai (Woh Lamhe), Tune “Gori Gori” (Main Hoon Na) , and many more. Apart from his songs in Hindi, KK also worked in Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and Malayalam, among many other languages.

KK died of a heart attack on 31 May after his stage show in Kolkata. The 53-year-old singer reportedly felt unwell during the show, but completed his performance and returned to the hotel where his health deteriorated.
