Hottest day of the year recorded in Delhi, mercury reaches 39 degree Celsius

Delhi recorded the hottest day of the season at 39.1 degrees Celsius, seven notches above the season’s average, with temperatures expected to rise further in the next few days.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 40 degrees Celsius at many places in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Narela recorded a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius, 10 notches above normal. Palam observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 39.3 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road, Ridge, Gurgaon, Ayanagar, Najafgarh, Pitampura and Sports Complex recorded maximum temperatures of 40, 40.1, 40.5, 40.2, 40.7, 41.1 and 41.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

The official marker of the national capital, Safdarjung Observatory, recorded a maximum of 39.1 degrees Celsius, the highest for this season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the minimum temperature was recorded at 22.2 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season’s average.

The humidity level ranged from 16 to 70 per cent.

The Meteorological Department has predicted a severe heat wave at some places of Delhi for the next two days. The maximum temperature on Tuesday is expected to hover around 40 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 22 degrees Celsius.

For the plains, a “heat wave” is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 °C and is at least 4.5 °C above normal. According to the IMD, a “severe” heat wave is declared when the departure from normal temperature exceeds 6.5 degrees Celsius.

According to IMD officials, due to lack of rain in March, there has been such a severe heat. Generally, Delhi receives an average of 15.9 mm of rainfall in March.

Last year, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 40.1 degrees Celsius on March 30, the highest temperature in the month in at least 13 years.

The maximum temperature in Delhi on Sunday was recorded at 36.8 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal. The IMD said the minimum temperature was recorded at 20.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average.
