holi: Holi festivities begin with ‘Rangbhari Ekadashi’ in Kashi | Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: Forward Holi Devotees of God will celebrate the festival on March 18 Shiv Played with the deity amidst religious fervor on the occasion of Rangotsav in KashiRangbhari Ekadashi‘ on Monday.
According to mythology, Lord Shiva, after marrying Goddess Parvati on the day of Maha Shivaratri, comes to his permanent abode Kashi for ‘Gauna’ on ‘Falgun Shukla Ekadashi’. In Kashi, this day is celebrated as Rangbhari Ekadashi. It is believed that Lord Shiva celebrates Holi with his devotees at Kashi Vishwanath temple on the occasion of his ‘Gauna’ as he comes to Kashi with Goddess Parvati on the day of Rangbhari Ekadashi.
Due to the colorful Ekadashi celebration, the city is immersed in the Holi festival. Keeping the tradition, many devotees participated in the festivities by throwing gulal and rose petals at Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this occasion, a procession was taken out from the house of the former Mahant of Kashi Vishwanath temple carrying the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in a palanquin.
Playing conch, damru and other musical instruments completely covered in colours, devotees went to the sanctum sanctorum of Kashi Vishwanath temple and offered gulal and rose petals to the presiding deity of Kashi.
Apart from this, the city also witnessed another unique Holi festival – ‘Masane Ki Holi’ (Holi at the cremation ground with the ashes of the pyre) at Harishchandra Ghat. Kashi Moksha Dayani organized the program Seva Samiti, A procession of Baba Mashan Nath was taken out from Baba Keenaram Sthal to Harishchandra Ghat, where devotees played Holi with the ashes of the pyre.
However, traditionally a day after Rangbhari Ekadashi, Masane ki Holi is celebrated around burning pyres at the main cremation ground of Manikarnika Ghat. “Since the ghosts like their beloved ethereal ‘Gana’ do not get a chance to celebrate Holi with Lord Shiva on the day of Rangbhari Ekadashi.
Organizer Gulshan Kapoor said that the deity himself comes to the cremation ground the next day to play ‘Holi of the ashes of the pyre’ with him, adding that there will be ‘Chita Bhasma Holi’ (Holi of the ashes of the pyre) at Manikarnika Ghat. Held on Tuesday.
