New Delhi: The festival of colors – ‘Holi’ is near and excitement is already in the air. While for many people Holi is synonymous with colours, water balloons and sumptuous food, it is also important to keep the health of our environment in mind. The fun of playing Holi in an eco-friendly way is no less. Instead, it reduces pollution, carbon footprint and keeps us healthy and safe. Also, after playing eco-friendly Holi we will not regret it later as there will be no skin rashes or any detox program to follow to deal with it.
“Holi should be eco-friendly not only for our environment, but also for our health,” says Dr. Supriya Awasthi, Professor, School of Allied Health Sciences, Noida International University.
Given below are some ways to play eco-friendly Holi by Dr. Awasthi.
1. Use of Organic Dyes: Instead of buying chemicals made from chemicals, you can use organic and herbal colors. Chemical dyes not only damage the skin, eyes and hair but are also difficult to get rid of later. If you have diabetes, you should avoid using chemical dyes as people with diabetes are more prone to skin infections. Do not apply color on animals as it can cause serious infection in them.
Chemical dyes also cause inflammation, irritation in the eyes, rashes, lung infections and can harm people suffering from respiratory problems like asthma. These colors cause water, land and air pollution and also damage water bodies and soil. When the paint is mixed with water it cannot be removed by the traditional wastewater method.
2. Avoid Playing Holi With Water: You can use dry colors to save water. It also prevents the colors from reacting with our skin. To make natural dyes we can use everyday items like turmeric and gram flour to turn yellow, cornflour and henna to green. You will also enjoy making these colors and will be easy on the pocket too. You can enjoy unlimited with these shades without any fear of skin infection.
3. Avoid using plastic in any form: Do not use plastic for carrying colours, avoid using cheap plastic atomizers and balloons. Parties in Holi use paper or palm leaf plates. Also, do not throw plastic in the streets. Nowadays biodegradable atomizers are also available in the market. They are beautiful looking pitchers that can be a great investment for you. Balloons block the drainage system.
4. Avoid Noise: Avoid playing loud music or drums as it causes pollution and affects animals too but babies and the elderly.
5. Choose Alternative Healthy Foods: You can replace ghujia and deep fried foods with healthier alternatives to Holi dishes like baked gujiyas, brown bread dahi vada, ragi malpua, low-fat and non-bhang thandai and fruit raita. Try making your own sweets at home so that you can control the carbohydrates, oil, and sugar that go into making them.
Make sure to drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water to keep yourself hydrated while enjoying all the festivities, otherwise, the festivities may turn into dehydration and protracted detox therapy later on. Also, make up for your involvement in physical activity by dancing openly.
6. Choose Eco Friendly Gifts for Your Loved Ones: Instead of gifting colors, you can gift DIY coloring kits, healthy snacks, dry fruits, scented candles, etc. as pichkari gifts.
7. Use Flowers: There are many traditional places and temples in India where Holi is played with flowers. You can give up the colors completely and opt for flowers to play Holi and make Rangoli. The flowers can also be used to make herbal colours. They will not affect your skin and eyes but will benefit the skin.
