The Indian women’s hockey team scored a late goal to seal a narrow 1-0 win over Ireland in the final pool match to stay alive at the Olympics here on Friday.

Needing a win to keep their hopes alive after three consecutive defeats, India waited impatiently for 57 minutes, after which Navneet Kaur made the winner to put her side up for a place in the quarter-finals.

India now need to win their final Pool A match against South Africa on Saturday and are expected to lose to Great Britain for a place in the quarter-finals of Ireland.

The top four teams from each pool qualify for the knockout stage.
