A Hindu organization on Friday demanded that no new license should be issued by the Gurugram Municipal Corporation for setting up new meat shops in the city. The Hindu Sangharsh Samiti submitted a memorandum addressed to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar demanding that the civic authorities should skip the process of issuing any such license.

Claiming that Khattar himself had promised that no new licenses would be issued for the sale of meat in the “holy” city of Gurugram, as it is home to the Sheetla Mata shrine, the committee demanded that a fresh license be sought. All 126 applications should be rejected. The committee has threatened to protest if the civic agency goes ahead with the process.

In its memorandum addressed to the CM, the committee said, “In October 2017 you had promised that no fresh meat sale license would be issued in respect of Sheetla Mata Mandir and Guru Dronacharya. We want this application process to be cancelled. In addition, all existing meat shops should be moved outside the 10 km radius of Sheetla Mata Mandir, and existing illegal shops should be closed. ,

Gurugram has 119 licensed meat shops and over 1,500 unregistered ones. New licenses haven’t been issued for years. “Why should Gurugram be different when there are norms for other holy cities,” the committee asked.

Stating that the Sheetla Mata Mandir is a revered temple for the people of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the committee demanded that the area around it should be meat-free. “A separate market or area should be earmarked for registered legal sale and illegal shops should be closed. It is non-negotiable and was announced by the CM himself. Mahavir Bharadwaj, president of the Samyukta Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, said, “We will not accept it (issuance of licence).
