Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur interacting with the media in Shimla on Tuesday after the announcement of the bypoll results.
Accepting responsibility for his defeat, he said that he respects the decision of the people.
Indicating the vandalism in the wards, he said there were many people in the BJP, while in reality they were not.
He said the party leadership would definitely look into the issue of those who did not work for the party or those who worked against it. Keeping in view the shortcomings of the bypolls, the party leaders will sit together to chalk out a strategy for the 2022 assembly elections, he said.
Jai Ram Thakur said that Congress has won the Mandi parliamentary seat by-election by narrowest margin in history, so there is nothing for the party to celebrate.
He said this is not the first time that the party in power has lost an election. He said the Congress came to power in 2012 and lost all the four parliamentary seats to the BJP in the 2014 parliamentary elections.
“Then Congress was in power for almost two years while we are in power for the last four years,” he said.
He said that inflation is an issue not only in Himachal Pradesh or India but across the world and Congress used it as its biggest weapon in the bypoll campaign.
He said that the wave of sympathy for the late Virbhadra Singh also played a major role as Congress gained an edge in Rampur, Kinnaur, Bharmour and other tribal areas. The Chief Minister further said that around 13,000 votes cast under NOTA also played their part.
Senior Congress leader and former minister Sudhir Sharma said that the Congress had campaigned in the by-elections under a set strategy. He said that in Mandi parliamentary seat, the party raised issues of public importance like inflation, unemployment and lack of development in the area. He said that the entire government is camping in Mandi parliamentary seat to ensure the victory of the BJP candidate and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur himself is leading.
He said the BJP’s failure to contain dissent, especially in pacifying former minister and sitting MLA Anil Sharma and curbing Brahmin votes, resulted in the BJP’s defeat in the Mandi seat. He said that the BJP had included former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar in the election campaign at the last moment to secure the Brahmin vote bank, but by then it was too late.
He said that the bypoll results are an indication that the people of Himachal Pradesh have made up their mind to oust the BJP from power in 2022. He said that by winning all the four seats, the Congress will enter the assembly elections with new energy.
Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee President Kuldeep Singh Rathore said that the Chief Minister has lost the trust of the people of Himachal Pradesh and the result of this bypoll is a plebiscite against the ruling BJP government and he should resign on moral grounds.
BJP State President Suresh Kashyap He said that the results of the by-elections did not come as per the expectation of the BJP. He said the party would review all the election results in all the assembly seats as well as the Mandi parliamentary seat to know why the party failed to garner enough votes to win the election. He said that the deficiencies would be assessed and rectified.
