Himachal: 10 killed as van carrying wedding party falls into gorge, PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia

The pickup van carrying it to the wedding ceremony fell into a deep gorge.

At least 10 people were killed and two others were injured when a van going for a wedding function fell into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district on Monday. Shillai sub-divisional magistrate Suresh Singha told news agency PTI that the incident took place near Pashog in Shillai subdivision.

A total of 12 people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Of these, nine died on the spot, while one injured succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital at Paonta Sahib.

Expressing grief over the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the families of those killed. PM Modi also announced immediate relief of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

“Saddened by the loss of lives due to an accident in Sirmour, HP. Condolences to the bereaved families and prayers with the injured. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the kin of each of the deceased from PMNRF. Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured ,” he said in a tweet.

An official spokesperson said that Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls to rest in peace.

Thakur also directed the district administration to provide all possible help to the families affected in this accident and provide best treatment to the injured.
