Hijab Row : ‘Those who oppose burqa should be paraded naked,’ says Ex-SP MLA Zameer Ullah

Aligarh: Reacting to the incident of burqa-wearing girl students being barred from entering the campus in a college in Uttar Pradesh, former Samajwadi Party MLA Zameer Ullah Khan has said that “those who oppose the burqa should be taught a lesson”. They should be paraded naked”. There should be no ban, whoever bans burqa, first make him parade naked, said former MLA from Koil at Hindu College, Moradabad. What is this new dress code? Let them walk around naked, then they’ll know what it’s like to be exposed. He further said that if taking off the burqa is not a crime then being naked is also not a crime.

Following the October 2022 directive on dress code in the college, authorities on Wednesday barred several girl students in burqas from entering the campus, triggering widespread protests in the area, which were also attended by SP leaders and workers. On wearing a burqa in the Hindu College of Moradabad, Khan said that it is absolutely wrong. If girls want to wear burqa then there should be no restriction on it and those who ban it should be paraded naked.

The former MLA said that burqa is the culture of India. In the villages of India, even the voices of sisters and daughters are not heard, they are forced to stay behind the scenes. Despite the prescribed uniform code for students in the state’s Moradabad, they were not given admission in the college for wearing a burqa.

The girl students alleged that their college was not allowing them to enter the college premises wearing burqas and was forcing them to remove it at the entrance. A scuffle broke out between the students, activists of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha and the professors of the college, who remained adamant. During this the college professor Dr. AP Singh said that they have implemented a dress code for the students here and anyone who refuses to follow it will be barred from entering the college premises. On this, members of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha submitted a memorandum to include the burqa in the college dress code and allow girls to attend their classes wearing it.
