‘He’s going to end up on top’: Shane Watson suggests Joe Root can get close to Sachin’s most Test runs

Former England captain Joe Root played his first Test match against New Zealand at Lord’s since relinquishing his Test captaincy and he could not have asked for a better start to the new phase of his career. He played a match-winning innings at Lord’s and helped England win the first Test by 5 wickets.

Root’s unbeaten century garnered a lot of attention as many praised the former England captain. And now, former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has lauded the 31-year-old English batsman for his remarkable innings.

The former England captain’s century not only helped his team win the first Test but also helped them achieve a remarkable feat. During his match-winning innings against the Kiwis, Root managed to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

Overall, Root became the 14th cricketer to cross the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. Watson believes that the current cricketers have every potential for Root to score runs.

“He’s as good as he can get. Certainly, he has a lot of good cricket in front of him, so I think he’s going to come very close. Just seeing where Joe Root is right now, He is the youngest player along with Kane Williamson, who is also 31. They both still found a proper path. I think Joe Root is going to end up on top. For the rest, it’s Depends on how much cricket they continue to play. They still have a lot of cricket left in them,” Watson told former cricketer Isa Guha on the ICC review show.

Coming into the Test match, after a batting collapse in the first innings, the Kane Williamson-led side managed to come back into the match as they scored a total of 285 runs in the second innings and set a target of 277 for the hosts. ,

England were initially in trouble after the opening batsmen returned early to the dressing room. But Root (115 not out from 170 balls) and captain Ben Stokes (54 off 110 balls) eventually helped England reach the target.
