The director praised Devgn’s professionalism and punctuality on set, saying he could not believe what he saw onscreen and Devgn’s transformation.
Director Amit Sharma, known for films like Tevar and Badhaai Ho, is currently busy with his upcoming project Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn and Priyamani. The film, shooting for which started in 2019 and faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is now scheduled to hit theaters next month. In a recent interview, Sharma discussed his experience working with Ajay Devgn on Maidaan. He revealed that initially, he had reservations about Devgn’s ability to portray the character of Syed Rahim convincingly. He expressed his doubts, saying, “I had a doubt that, ‘How Ajay Devgn will play the role of Syed Rahim? In my mind, my image of Ajay Devgn was of ‘Singham’, And Syed Rahim doesn’t have an upright posture (like that of Singham).”
However, Sharma’s perception changed after an interaction with Devgn before filming began. He recalled meeting the actor and telling him that he doesn’t see many dialogues of him in the film as the protagonist, Syed Rahim talks less. After the script was done, he asked Devgn to listen to the narration and about Syed Abdul Rahim, to which Devgn agreed.
“So I gave him a narration. And he just said tell me what I am supposed to do. He is a director’s actor. He doesn’t ask questions; the Director has said this, it is like this. And I saw the transformation of this man from Singham to Syed Abdul Rahim. So I say this openly – Apart from him, nobody else could do this role. He is such an amazing actor,” Sharma explained to Pinkvilla.
He further praised Devgn’s professionalism and punctuality on set, saying he could not believe what he saw onscreen and Devgn’s transformation. He also mentioned that Devgn himself credited Sharma for this and said, “It is coming out naturally because you have given such a world around me, and the script is such that it has made my life easy. He is a quality actor.”
Sharma further added that they had a lot of discussions and spoke about the character. “He is a director’s actor. He is professional, he is punctual, he is on-time. No questions asked, just there for you.”
Maidaan, which shows Devgn’s remarkable performance as Syed Rahim, is set to release in theaters on April 10, 2024.
