Incidentally, he told reporters shortly after Bezos came back from space flight that it was Amazon customers who had, in a way, paid for his dream of going to space. “I want to thank every Amazon employee and every Amazon customer because you guys paid for all of this,” he said in a post-flight press conference. “Seriously, to every Amazon customer and every Amazon employee, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. I appreciate it so much.”
Damon got a seat on the flight only after the winner of the online auction for the seat backed out. The winner paid $28 million for the ticket to space. Damon said his family didn’t pay anywhere close to that amount, but did not disclose how much it cost him to travel to space. “We didn’t even pay about $28 million, but they chose me because I was the youngest and I was also a pilot and I already knew a lot about it,” he said.
