Here’s How to Support Your LGBTQ Friend or Coworker at Work

It is a bitter truth that life is not easy for the people of LGBTQ community. In India, the community was relaxed in September 2018 when the Supreme Court struck down Section 377, which used to criminalize homosexual sex. The top court also ruled that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation would be a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India. However, the Supreme Court ruling did not mean that discrimination against the queer community should end overnight.

Whether at home or in the workplace, people in the LGBTQ community are still struggling to find their place. If you have friends or coworkers at work who belong to the LGBTQ community, you should support them whenever possible. Here are some simple exercises that will help support a queer friend or coworker at work.

don’t jump to conclusions

It’s good that you want to help out your queer friend or co-worker, but you should also keep your boundaries. If you think that person is giving you signs of being queer, the most important thing is to never pressure them to come out. They should feel a sense of comfort in your presence and can have their sweet time. You should not guess about their identity or jump to any conclusions otherwise it can be very strange.

To declare

You should condemn homophobic jokes or behavior at your workplace as it may affect your coworker’s mental health. Additionally, if you don’t call out this kind of behavior, your coworker, who confides in you, will feel that you condemn this kind of mindset.

educate others

There are many educated and educated people who see homosexuality as some kind of disease. You can also meet such people in your workplace. You can help them understand about the LGBTQ community and that gay people are also an equal part of society.

support your partner
