Here’s how online classes affect kids’ mental health

Online education has replaced physical classes as schools turn to digital platforms since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic early last year. Though students are regularly attending online classes, it is insufficient for their learning. Online classes are also having a negative impact on the mind and body of children. Children who used to learn in schools because of being with teachers and friends are not able to learn through online classes.

According to Dr Komal Manshani, Senior Child Psychologist, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Delhi, online classes have both advantages and disadvantages.

“At least amid the pandemic, online classes have given students an opportunity to study at their own pace and at their own pace,” Dr Manshani said in an exclusive interview to News18.

However, online classes are not sufficient for children’s education as they lack to address the social aspect of academics. Dr Manshani said, “School education has two important aspects – academic and social. Online learning seems to be limited to the academic aspect only, while the social aspect is taught in school. In school, the child learns to interact with his peers as well as interact with teachers. School prepares children how to live, how to talk, how to behave etc. How we should cooperate with each other, how we should help each other etc. are taught in the school. Online classes cannot provide these aspects. ,

Pointing out the negative impact of online classes, Dr Manshani said that with the digital shift and online classes, children have got an opportunity to get familiar with e-gadgets, but it is affecting their mind too. According to Dr Manshani, the children could not handle the freedom they got in online classes well and they lacked motivation and self-discipline.

Dr Manshani said that children are also complaining of problems like back pain due to sitting in front of the screen for hours, which is causing them not only physical but also mental problems.

Schools are resorting to online classes due to the lockdown caused by the Kovid-19 pandemic. Several states across the country have kept schools closed since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic early last year. Although some states have started reopening schools in a phased manner, the threat of Omicron version has forced states to close educational institutions again.
