‘Here What We Found’: RCB Points To MCC Law After Virat Kohli’s Controversial Dismissal Against MI in IPL 2022

Virat Kohli was on the receiving end of a questionable umpiring decision that saw him go leg before wicket in the IPL 2022 contest between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday night. Kohli was batting on 48 and as a result of that controversial call, missed a half-century and displayed his dismay by slamming his bat to the ground on his way to the RCB dug-out at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

Chasing 152 runs, RCB were well ahead and were just seven runs away from victory when MI brought Dewald Brevis into the attack and with his first delivery, he lbw Kohli, but the batsman struck on-field. Review the decision. Replays suggested that the ball may have hit the bat and pad at the same time, but the TV umpire considered that there was insufficient evidence to overturn the decision and, therefore, the on-field decision was upheld.

The decision sparked a heated debate on social media and fans demanded the BCCI to ‘educate’ its umpires. Why? Because according to the MCC rules of cricket, when the ball hits the bat and the pad simultaneously, it will be considered that it has touched the bat first and therefore eliminates the possibility of lbw.

According to MCC Laws 36.2.2 of Cricket, “If the ball comes into contact with the person of the striker and is simultaneously batted, it shall be deemed to have touched the bat first.”

The official Twitter handle of RCB shared the rule on Sunday afternoon, fueling the already ongoing debate.

“We were reading the MCC Cricket Rules for LBW decisions and here’s what we found,” the tweet read.

It is unfortunate that Virat Kohli had to go back disappointed after a brilliant innings.

However, the dismissal had no effect on the final result, although RCB beat MI by seven wickets.
