Hekhani Jakhlau Creates History by Becoming First Woman to Be Elected to Nagaland Assembly

In Dimapur III seat, NDPP candidate Jakhalu defeated his nearest rival Azeto Zhimomi of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) by 1,536 votes.

Hekhani Jakhlu created history on Thursday by becoming the first woman to be elected Nagaland assembly, officials said.

Jakhlu, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate from Dimapur III seat, defeated his nearest rival Azeto Zhimomi of Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) by 1,536 votes. Election Indian commission said.

This time the Nagaland Assembly elections were contested by four women candidates – Hekhani Jakholu, Salhautuo Kruse, Hukali Sema and Rosie Thompson.

According to the Election Commission’s website, NDPP’s Salhoutuo Kruse is leading in West Angami seat and BJP’s Hukali Sema is also leading in Etoizu constituency.
