Heavy rains lash parts of Assam, Meghalaya

Traffic was disrupted in many parts of Assam and Meghalaya due to heavy rains on Thursday morning. The flood situation in Assam’s Tamulpur district has worsened as new areas of the district were submerged in flood waters of several rivers today.

In Assam, a part of a bridge collapsed in Subankhata area of ​​Baksa district on June 15 as a result of incessant rains and rise in the water level of Dihing river. Following incessant rains, the water levels of the Boroliya, Pagaladiya and Motoanga rivers have overflowed and several villages have been submerged affecting over 20,000 people.

According to the district administration, several villages in the district including Hahkata, Balbari, Dwarkuchi, Chapatol, Cholikonda, Guwakuchi Nij-Defeli and Kekrikuchi are currently submerged in water and teams of the district administration, SDRF are engaged in rescue work. Many villages have shifted to safer places after flood waters inundated houses.

A flood-affected person from Hahkata village said that this year also the embankment was broken near Balbari area due to flood waters. The flood-affected person said, “The minister of the state’s water resources department had earlier visited the area, but the work of strengthening the embankment was not done properly. Now we are facing huge problems.”

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), around 75,000 people in 18 districts of the state have been affected by the current wave of floods till June 15. The ASDMA flood report states that, as of June 15, 314 village areas under 37 revenues have been affected by floods and flood waters have submerged 1731.18 hectares of crop land.

Meanwhile, due to an incessant heavy downpour, parts of the road under Lumshnong police station limits on National Highway-6 were heavily damaged, disrupting traffic in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district.
