Heavy rain warning in Kerala, red alert in 5 districts; CM Pinarayi Vijayan issued caution

A red alert has been issued in five districts of Kerala amid warnings of heavy rain in the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for seven other districts and a yellow alert for two districts of the state.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has said that there will be a high alert for the next 24 hours. A red alert has been sounded in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts.

Heavy rains are lashing the South and Central districts of Kerala. There is a possibility of heavy rain in the northern districts of Kerala till Saturday evening.

CM Vijayan has also said that there is a possibility of rise in water level in rivers and overflow in some dams.

“People living along the river banks and below the dam area should remain alert and follow the instructions given by the authorities. Do not enter water bodies for any reason. Travels to high-class areas should be avoided as much as possible. Those living in areas prone to soil slippage and landslides should exercise extreme caution”, the chief minister posted a statement on Facebook.
