Heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR. Waterlogging at airport, flights canceled

New Delhi: Heavy rains lashed the national capital on Saturday morning, causing waterlogging in the Delhi airport premises and other parts of the city.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) senior scientist Dr RK Jenamani said that this year Delhi has received the highest 24-hour rainfall in 121 years.

He said, “September has received 390 mm of rain – the highest in 77 years, after 417 mm in September 1944. Delhi has recorded 1,139 mm of rain in four months, which is the highest in 46 years since 1975 in less than 1,155 mm.” , reported ANI.

The Delhi airport said that due to heavy rains, passengers faced waterlogging for a while, bringing normalcy to operations.

“Due to the heavy rains, the commuters faced waterlogging for a while. The on-ground team was immediately mobilized and operations went back to normal by 9 am. @JM_Scindia @MoCA_GoI,” tweeted Delhi Airport.

Several areas, including Vikas Marg, Sangam Vihar, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Rohtak Road, Badarpur, Som Vihar, RK Puram, Munirka, Rajpur Khurd, Nangloi, Hari Nagar, Pul Prahladpur Underpass, Madhu Vihar and Moti Bagh also witnessed waterlogging.

Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) said, “Our personnel are present round the clock to monitor the situation.”

“Due to heavy rains in the morning (Saturday), there was water logging at many places. A PWD official said, “We are dealing with those issues on priority basis.

The Delhi Traffic Police also posted tweets informing people about the areas where they fear waterlogging.

“Traffic alert to inform that there is heavy water logging due to drain overflow and rain, near T point of road no 210 and 224 near DJB Booster Pump Dwarka. Commuters informed to avoid stretch till the situation normalises,” Delhi Traffic Police said in a tweet earlier in the day.

Waterlogging at Delhi airport, flights canceled

At least three flights were canceled and five were diverted to Jaipur and Ahmedabad after the Delhi airport courtyard was flooded due to heavy rains in the national capital early Saturday.

Four domestic flights – two of SpiceJet and one each of IndiGo and GoFirst – were diverted to Jaipur. An international flight – Emirates flight from Dubai to Delhi – was diverted to Ahmedabad, sources said, PTI reported.

Sources said three IndiGo flights, which were scheduled to depart from Delhi, were canceled due to bad weather.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia tweeted earlier in the day that he had spoken to airport officials and was “told that the waterlogging was cleared within 30 minutes”.

He posted on the micro-blogging platform, “Contacted the authorities at the airport and was informed that the waterlogging was cleared within 30 minutes.”

The Aerocity area near the airport also got waterlogged in the morning as people tried to drive their cars through the stagnant water.

40 passengers rescued from bus stuck in underpass filled with water after rain

At least 40 passengers, including women and children, who were traveling in a private bus were rescued by the Delhi Fire Service, officials said.

He told that the bus going to Mathura got stuck on the underpass of Palam flyover.

Officials further said that the Delhi Fire Service received a call seeking assistance at 11:30 am, following which two fire tenders were pressed into service.
