Heaviest rain of the season in the city, more in the coming days: Weather | Kanpur News – Times of India

Kanpur: The city received the heaviest rain of the season, which continued for several hours on Thursday. According to the Meteorological Department of CSA University, the weather will be similar on Friday. Rain are in trend.
After the rain started around midnight on Wednesday, more than 70 mm of rain was recorded till 8 pm. Till the time of writing the news, heavy rains continued in the city.
According to the Meteorological Department, in the last 10 years, the city has not received such heavy rain in a single day. In 2011 and 2012, 00 mm and 14.5 mm of rain were recorded on this date, while in 2004, 2013, 2017- 2020 there was no rainfall on this date. In 2015, 5.5 mm of rain was recorded on 16 September, while only 1.8 mm of rain was recorded the next year.
While the average rainfall for September is 167.2 mm, about 100 mm of rain, including 28 mm of rain between September 1 and 15, has already been measured in the city and more rain is expected. However, the uneven distribution of rainfall is a cause of concern for climatologists and farmers. Between September 1 and September 10, the rain gauge was only 8 mm, while in the last six days, about 92 mm of rain has been measured.
Speaking to TOI, Dr SN Sunil Pandey, agrometologist at CSA University said, “The total rain gauge for the city during the monsoon season is 870 mm. Earlier it seemed that the season was rain deficient this year with only 739 mm of rain but now on Thursday more than 70 mm of rain has been recorded in a single day. Similar conditions will continue on Friday as well, although the intensity of rain will reduce but light to moderate rain will continue till September 19.
Dr Pandey said that uneven distribution of rain will not be beneficial for the farmers. “There was not much rain in the first 10 days of September and now it is raining heavily. Such rains cause damage to standing crops. Changing weather patterns lead to such rains”, he said, adding that usually the southwest monsoon starts retreating by September 17 but this year it does not seem so. He said that it appears that the withdrawal may start only after September 30 as there is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere at present.
