New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department said on Friday (June 10, 2022) that the ongoing heatwave over northwest and central India subsided slightly yesterday and the maximum temperature is likely to drop by two to three degrees by next week. Northwest and central India is in the grip of heat wave since June 2 due to the onslaught of hot and dry westerly winds. “The ongoing heatwave spell is less intense than that recorded in April-end and May, but the area of impact is almost equal,” said senior IMD scientist RK Jenamani.
Heat wave conditions prevailed in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Jharkhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh during the day with the maximum temperature reaching 46.2 degree Celsius. 25 towns and cities in these states recorded maximum temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius, 32 on Thursday and 42 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
The Meteorological Office also said that the mercury in Delhi-NCR and other parts of northwest India will drop by a few degrees over the weekend but no major relief is likely till June 15.
Delhi Weather Updates
The Meteorological Department has not predicted any significant change in maximum temperatures over Northwest and Central India for the next 48 days. “No significant change in maximum temperature is likely over North-West and Central India during the next 48 hours and thereafter the maximum temperature may drop by 2-3 degree Celsius,” the IMD said in its daily bulletin.
The IMD said the national capital is likely to remain partly cloudy on Saturday with chances of thunder and lightning. The minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be 30 degree Celsius and 43 degree Celsius respectively.
Pre-monsoon activity from tomorrow
The IMD said that pre-monsoon activity has been predicted over East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha from June 12, but north Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and north Madhya Pradesh will see above-normal temperatures till June 15. Will stay Till June 15, the temperature will be between 40 degree Celsius and 43 degree Celsius.
“There may be some relief in parts of Northwest India including Delhi-NCR on June 11-12. It will be cloudy over the weekend but there is no chance of rain,” he said.
“Thunderstorm and rain may occur in this region from June 16 onwards due to moisture-laden easterly winds, which is expected to bring considerable relief from the heat,” he said.
“No significant heatwave is likely over any part of the country during the week (June 16 to June 22),” the IMD said in its bulletin.
