Heatwave continues over Northwest, Central India; monsoon inches ahead

New Delhi: North West and parts of Central India Uttar Pradesh’s Banda was engulfed in heatwave on Tuesday and recorded a maximum temperature of 46.6 degrees Celsius, with no respite until at least Friday. At least 37 towns and cities in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh recorded maximum temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal. Monsoon is expected to remain in a weak phase for at least one more week and after picking up pace till June 15, good rains are likely.

In Delhi, the national capital’s base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal. The Met Office said no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the next two to three days over the north-west and central parts of the country and the mercury is likely to drop by two to three degrees thereafter.

The India Meteorological Department said, “Heatwave conditions are very likely to occur at isolated places over Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Delhi and East Madhya Pradesh during June 7-9.” There is a possibility of heatwave in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. On the Monsoon front, due to westerly winds from the Arabian Sea over South Peninsular India, widespread rain and thundershowers are very likely to occur over Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep in the next five days.

The Meteorological Office on Wednesday has predicted heavy rain at isolated places in South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala till Saturday.
