The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heatwave conditions over Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Andhra Pradesh and Yanam till April 7. In its press release, the weather department says that warm night conditions are likely to prevail over Odisha and North interior Karnataka till April 6.
While states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Puducherry, West Bengal, and Odisha are likely to experience hot and humid weather till April 7.

- Under its influence, the area will witness rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand till April 6.
- A cyclonic circulation lies over west Rajasthan and adjoiningPakistan and its neighbourhood said the weather update.
- The cyclonic circulation over north Bangladesh persists, and another cyclonic circulation lies over east Assam and its neighbourhood.
- Under the influence of these weather systems, IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till April 9.
- Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar will also witness scattered light or moderate rainfall till April 9.
- “Gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C very likely over many parts of east India till April 6 and no significant change thereafter.” read a statement from the weather department.
- Maximum temperature likely to exceed the 95th percentile over parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh from today.
- India is set to experience extreme heat during the April to June period, with the central and the western peninsular parts expected to face the worst impact, the IMD said.
- “It is going to be very challenging for all of us. Since we are the most populous country in the world and face extreme weather conditions, it makes it absolutely necessary for India to prepare in advance,” said Union Minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju.
- India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the anticipated increase in outdoor activities during the 2024 general elections could heighten public vulnerability to heatwave. With greater exposure, there’s an elevated risk of heatwave-related health issues among the electorate and election staff, he said.
- Above-normal heatwave days are likely over most parts in the plains during April-June.
- Ten to 20 days of heatwave are expected in different parts of the country against a normal of four to eight days.
- Mohapatra said Gujarat, central Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, north Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience the worst impact of heatwave.
