Amidst the ongoing weather conditions, the weather office advised people to avoid heat exposure, wear lightweight, light colour, loose and cotton clothes, cover head, use a cloth, hat or umbrella

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over parts of peninsular India during the next two days. As per the weather office’s predictions, heat wave conditions are very likely to be prevalent over North Tamil Nadu, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh on April 7 and over Telangana and Karnataka on April 7 and 8.

What is a heatwave?

Heatwave is a condition of air temperature that becomes dangerous and fatal when exposed to the human body . It is defined on the basis of the temperature thresholds over a region in terms of actual temperature or its departure from normal.

The heat wave is considered if the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degree Celsius or more for plains and at least 30 degree Celsius or more for Hilly regions.

Amidst the ongoing weather conditions, the weather office advised people to avoid heat exposure, wear lightweight, light colour, loose and cotton clothes, cover head, use a cloth, hat or umbrella.

Here are some of the Dos and Don’ts to follow amidst the heatwave alert in the country:

Dos

  • Make sure you hydrate yourself with enough water.
  • Do avoid dehydration by following correct intake of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution), homemade summer drinks like coconut water, lemon water, butter milk and many others.
  • Wear cotton, light-colored, and light weight clothes during summer season.
  • Always use umbrella, hat, sunglasses, and a cloth to protect your skin and eyes from the sun rays.
  • Take extra care of the elderly, children and the ones who are overweight.

Dont’s

  • Do not roam out in the sun between 12 noon and 3 pm.
  • Avoid doing any kind of strenuous activities.
  • Avoid consuming salty, spicy, oily, and high protein food.
  • One should also not cook during peak hours in summer.
  • Make sure to not leave your pets and kids alone in parked vehicles.

Updates and Prediction By Weather Office Over Last Week

The weather office on Sunday said that warm night conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets over North Interior Karnataka on April 7 and 8 and over Odisha on April 7.

In a press release, the IMD also stated that hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over Kerala, coastal areas of Gujarat between April 7-11, Karnataka on April 7 and over Andhra Pradesh during April 8 to 11.

On Friday, the IMD had forecasted that a heatwave is expected to prevail over east and peninsular India for the next two days.

Earlier this week, Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju also said that there are Lok Sabha elections in the next few days and precautions have been taken for the heatwave. “We had a two-day meeting with State governments regarding preparations and issued an advisory for the same,” he added.

While talking about the prevailing heatwave conditions, Rijiju said, “According to our projections, a huge region of the country is going to be affected with heatwave including states like West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.”
