The top court, which was upset over Mallya’s repeated non-appearance, also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him, finding him “guilty of contempt”.

The Supreme Court has sentenced fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya to four months imprisonment in the 2017 contempt case. The top court, which was annoyed by Mallya’s repeated ‘non-appearance’, found him ‘guilty of contempt’ and also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him.

SC has said that Mallya will have to undergo further imprisonment for two months if the fine is not deposited on time. While passing its order, the court said, “He showed no remorse.”

The apex court was scheduled to announce the punishment for the fugitive businessman in the 2017 contempt case today. Mallya was found guilty of contempt for violating court orders by transferring $40 million to his children, and ordered to repay more than Rs 6,200 crore in bank loans, and $4 million from British spirits maker Diageo. The lawsuit was filed for contempt for failing to disclose the payment of 40 million.

Mallya is in the United Kingdom as an accused in a bank loan default case involving over Rs 9,000 crore Kingfisher Airlines.

The Supreme Court’s 2017 decision was based on a petition filed by a consortium of banks led by State Bank of India. India (SBI) alleged that Mallya had allegedly transferred $40 million received from British firm Diageo to his children in “gross violation” of various judicial orders.
