Former India selector Dilip Vengsarkar believes Gill is one of the finest young players currently playing for the country and has all the required shots in his textbook.

The much-awaited World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia is round the corner and speculations have already started about the possible team combination. The Indian contingent has reached the United Kingdom after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has started training at the venue for the marquee clash – The Oval. While senior players will be in focus, fans and experts will also be eager to watch Shubman Gill, who has been in scintillating form of late.

Gill has had a stellar IPL season with the bat in hand. The Gujarat Titans opener won the Orange Cap with 890 runs and three hundreds. Earlier, the young Indian batsman also registered a double century in ODIs and later, scored a century against Australia in the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad.

Former India selector Dilip Vengsarkar believes Gill is one of the finest young players currently playing for the country and has all the required shots in his textbook.

“Shubman Gill is an outstanding cricketer. We have high hopes from him. He has a very bright future for India. He is a very skilful player. He has a good temperament and all other necessary qualities to play for India for a long period of time and has developed into a match-winner,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Asked whether Gill needed to tweak his batting technique, the former selector said, “No, not at all.” If you watch his batting carefully, the strokes he plays are mostly according to the manual. All of them are cricket shots in T20 format as well. That’s why he is an all-format player.”

Earlier during the Australia Test, Gill replaced the out-of-form KL Rahul in the last two Tests at Indore and Ahmedabad. The latter was also named in the 15-man squad for the ICC WTC Finals, but was later ruled out due to an injury sustained during the IPL. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has been included in the squad in place of Rahul.
