‘He doesn’t like spotlight’: Gary Kirsten on his ‘close friend’ Ashish Nehra

Gujarat Titans had a memorable start in the IPL, putting an end to all the speculations regarding the makeup of their squad to dominate the season and become the champions. GT Team Mentor Gary Kirsten and Head Coach Ashish Nehra formed a strong partnership playing a key role in the team’s success. Kirsten is not new to winning major titles having previously coached India To win the ODI World Cup title in 2011 but for Nehra it was the first major title in a coaching role.

Kirsten has nothing but admiration for her coaching partner, who she found to be someone uninterested in taking the spotlight, while always thinking about how she could improve her players.

“Ashish is a close friend and we have come a long way together. As a player, I have enjoyed his willingness to understand his game and his professionalism. He coaches with his heart, always thinking about his players and how he can help them,” said Kirsten cricbuzz,

“He is low profile and does not like the spotlight. He is deftly one of the best coaches in IPL and is always talking to his players about how to perform better.

Kirsten shed some light on Nehra’s coaching method and how he used to prepare players for different match situations.

“Ashish wants his players to have options and he helps them understand when to use them. A set game-plan is not possible in IPL; Matches are extremely complex with new scenarios all the time. It requires moment to moment planning and players who can think for themselves and adjust a game-plan or use a different strategy in an over,” explained Kirsten.

He continued, “As coaches we help players think it through. I think we really complement each other, and we trust each other’s work. I added more to his thinking.” Wherever I could, just played a role of assisting them to keep the wheels on track.”
