‘He did it better than anyone’: Michael Clarke remembers close friend Shane Warne

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has opened up on the death of legendary spinner Shane Warne and said it will take him some time to recover from the loss of a close friend. Warne died on Friday of a heart attack as he was found unresponsive at a luxury resort in Koh Samui, Thailand. Warne was a senior in the Australian team in Clarke’s early days of cricket as the two shared a good bond both on and off the field.

Clarke remembered his close friend saying that there is one thing one should take out of his legacy and that is to celebrate the life that Warne did.

‘They celebrated the journey,’ he told the KIIS Kyle and Jackie O radio show. ‘It’s something I need to recognize more: You have to celebrate the good times.

‘Warney celebrated life the way he played – on the field – and off the field – the way he played. He did it better than anyone and if we can take one thing away from his legacy, it is to celebrate life.

According to the Daily Mail, the 2015 World Cup-winning captain received the sad news through his promotional agent over the phone late at night.

Clarke said it is hard for her to believe that her close friend has passed away and it will take time for her to recover from the loss.

“To be honest, I know someone close to me has passed away, but I don’t think I can still understand that it’s one of my best friends,” Clarke said on Monday.

‘It’s going to take a while. It’s definitely still real. Because it happened so quickly, it’s so hard to believe, you know?’

Warne played a total of 145 Tests in a career spanning 15 years, taking 708 wickets, and was also an effective lower-order batsman with the highest Test score of 99.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Saturday that Australians were “shocked” by Warne’s “tragic and sudden loss”, and announced that the cricketing hero would receive a state funeral.
