HDMC vacations shops at 60-year-old building; structure to be raised | Hubballi News – Times of India

Hubballi: A 60-year-old building near the Hubballi suburban police station, housing a commercial complex, will to be razed by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) given its dilapidated condition. hdmc on Tuesday asked all the owners and employees of all shops in the complex. However, the owners did not leave without argument, and engaged in a heated exchange with the HDMC officials on the spot.
The exercise to vacate all the shops was supervised by Hubballi zone nine assistant commissioner Sidgonda. Cracks have appeared on the building, which was inspected by the superintending team of engineers from HDMC, and a team of civil engineers from SDM College. Both teams were unanimously in recommending to the HDMC that the building be demolished. The experts were of the opinion that the condition of the building was precarious, implying that there was the risk of its coming down, thereby posing a threat to the safety of those in the complex, and the neighbors as well.
Sidgonda told TOI that the corroded iron rods on the first and second floors were one of the many indicators of the building’s fragile condition. “Portion of the roof is hanging, and there is a very real risk that it might collapse. We had already issued notice to the shopowners, asking them to vacate, twice. We cannot take any chance since this is a matter of public safety,” Sidgonda said.
The report confirming that the building’s condition was ‘unstable’ was submitted by a team of engineers led by Thimmappa. Sidgonda said that they had vacated 10 shops as on Tuesday noon. “Demolition of the building will be undertaken on Wednesday,” he said.
Shopowners, however, alleged that the HDMC was forcibly evicting them from the complex. They pointed out that the issue was pending before the court, which had scheduled the next hearing on February 8. “HDMC vacated us, nevertheless, citing the condition of the building,” disgruntled shopowners said.
