The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has cast doubt on the police in connection with the murder of a minor boy during a clash in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. The commission said that the investigating agency may try to save the accused. In this regard, the NCPCR has also written a letter to the DGP, in which the commission alleged that the police has failed to comply with the law under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, Code of Criminal Procedure and other laws.

The letter written by the NCPCR states that around 16 minor children have been named as accused in the counter FIR registered by the police. There are also some children in this who were not in the village on the day of the incident. This gives rise to suspicion that the investigating agency is trying to shield the accused. The letter states that the authorities have failed to conduct a fair investigation and are using various methods of intimidation of witnesses, which will help in the false narrative created by the officers.

The NCPCR had on Thursday recommended handing over the case to the CBI. It also asked Jharkhand DGP Neeraj Sinha to take disciplinary action against the district police officials and provide security to the witnesses and their family members.

Significantly, 17-year-old Rupesh Kumar Pandey of Hazaribagh district was killed in a clash during the immersion procession of the idol of Goddess Saraswati at Barhi on February 6. As a result of which communal tension had arisen in the area. In this case, the officials of NCPCR had visited Barhi in Hazaribagh to conduct the investigation and take stock of the progress of the investigation. The commission had sent its inspection report along with other recommendations to the DGP on Thursday.
