Which country celebrates the new year first?

Kiritimati Island – also known as Christmas Island – and a chain of 10 other uninhabited islands in the central Pacific Ocean will ring for the first time in 2023. Despite being located directly south of Hawaii, the island of Kiritimati will celebrate New Year’s almost all day long. First. At 11am GMT the tiny Pacific island of Tonga kicks off the New Year with New Zealand and Samoa. 11am GMT is 4.30pm on December 31 in India.

Where will the new year come?

Due to different time zones, some countries have to wait longer than others to start the new year. The last places to ring in 2023 will be Baker Island and Howland Island. They will see the new year on January 1st at 12 noon GMT.
