Happy Eid! Here’s how netizens wish, cheer on Eid al-Adha 2022

New Delhi: Eid al-Adha, popularly known as Bakra Eid, is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated with enthusiasm by Muslims around the world. The festival comes a day after the pilgrims who perform the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, descend from Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia. It is celebrated approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.

Eid means ‘festival’ in Arabic, while ‘Adha or Juha’ means ‘sacrifice’. This festival is celebrated across the world to commemorate the wish of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail as a form of obedience to God.

Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated in the month of Zul Hijjah / Dhu al-Hijjah – the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar.

Here, we bring you some social media messages that show how Muslims across the world are celebrating the festival.

What is the significance of ‘Festival of Sacrifice’?

The day commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son in order to obey God. According to the Quran, it is said that before Prophet Ibrahim or Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, God instead provided a lamb for the sacrifice.

In memory of this, Muslims around the world sacrifice a goat and divide it into three parts: one-third is given to the poor and needy; Another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; And the remaining third stays with the family.

This festival of sacrifice is celebrated because Prophet Ibrahim agreed to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience. Satan seduced Ibrahim into saving his son and disobeying Allah. Ibrahim paid no heed to Satan’s evil thoughts and was about to sacrifice his son.
