Happy Birthday Yuvraj Singh: Revisiting the veteran all-rounder’s six sixes off Stuart Broad

Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is counted among the great players. India ever produced. He was a key member of India’s 2007 T20 and 2011 fifty-overs World Cup winning team. He has made many records in his one and a half decade long career. Among his plethora of achievements, Yuvraj is perhaps best known for his six sixes in an over off Stuart Broad. It was September 19, 2007, and the place was Kingsmead when Yuvraj entered the history book by achieving the unattainable.

What makes Yuvi’s exciting batting performance even more exciting is that he achieved the feat during the World Cup match between India and England at the inaugural edition of the marquee ICC event in South Africa.

Batting first Indian opener Virender Sehwag (68 runs from 52 balls) and Gautam Gambhir (58 off 41 balls) gave the Men in Blue a great start by adding 136 runs for the first wicket. It was, however, that Stuart’s over eclipsed everything as India posted 218 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.

Before Broad’s historic over, Yuvraj smashed 14 runs off 6 balls, hitting two successive fours off Andrew Flintoff. At the end of the over, Yuvraj and Flintoff were seen having a heated conversation and it was a tussle between the two, which led to Stuart hitting a hammer.

After his verbal spat with Flintoff, Yuvraj welcomed Stuart to mid-wicket with the first ball of the final over. He then hit a backward square leg six, sent the next ball to wide long off and hit the next ball over deep point. He swung the fifth to square leg before ending the over with a huge six at wide long-on.

With his final six of the over, Yuvi also completed his fifty off 12 balls – the fastest fifty in the history of the game – as his teammates celebrate on the stands.

Chasing 219 for victory, England managed to post 200/6 in 20 overs, losing the match by 18 runs.
