Shyam Benegal is considered the father of parallel cinema. He is considered one of the greatest filmmakers of the 1970s. He received many accolades for his work in the entertainment industry and was also honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in the field of Indian cinema. Benegal’s father was a professional photographer originally from Karnataka. He also twice served as the President of the Film Institute of India, now renamed the Film and Television Institute of India.
