Happy Birthday Hima Das: Achievements and Records of Indian Sprinter

On this 9th January, Indian sprinter Hima Das turned 22 years old. Hima Das’s name became a hot topic of discussion when she made a place in the hearts of Indians with her gold medal winning 400m sprint at the IAAF World U20 Championships 2018 in Tampere, Finland.

Hima, who was 18 at the time, was the pre-tournament favorite and lived up to the hype. He won the gold medal with a timing of 51.46 seconds, creating a festive atmosphere in the Indian camp. Interestingly, it wasn’t even his personal best. She bettered her U20 Championship timing in December 2020 at the National Inter-State Championships in Guwahati by taking a time of 51.13.

She currently holds the Indian national record in 400 meters of 50.79 seconds, set at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she won a silver medal. Manjit Kaur holds the previous Indian national record of 51.05 seconds.

Winning a gold medal is an incredible feat in itself, but winning seven in a span of two months is extraordinary. Das participated in the European Circuit Tour and World Championships in July and August 2019. His overall medal tally in these events was seven gold medals, five in the 200 m and two in the 400 m sprint.

Two gold and one silver in 2018 Asian Games

At the age of 18, Das participated in the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, where he won two gold and one silver medal. Also a 200m sprinter, the Assamese participated in the 400m events during the Asian Games. She broke the individual Indian national record twice, first during the qualification heat and then on her way to a silver medal in the final. She also won gold medals in the mixed 4×400 relay and women’s 4×400 relay.
