‘Hang their killers’: Family of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal tells Rajasthan CM

Udaipur: The family of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor who was brutally murdered by two men to avenge Islam, on Thursday demanded justice for the deceased and the harshest punishment for his killers, saying they should be hanged. The family told this to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who along with top state officials and Congress MLAs reached his home in Udaipur.

He also handed over a check of Rs 51 lakh to the family as compensation.

Speaking to the media after his visit, Gehlot said that he would also speak to Home Minister Amit Shah and request that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) complete the investigation in the case within a month. He said that it is a heinous murder which has shocked not only the state but the entire country and lauded the state police for swiftly arresting the accused and tracing their international links.



The victim’s son said that the chief minister has assured the family that they will get the security of the state. They demanded that the killers be hanged.



“Nothing less than this, the accused should be hanged,” he said. The chief minister told us that two policemen have been suspended for negligence and action can be taken against others as well.

“They have been in Karachi for 45 days, there is a link,” he said, as relatives around the son tried to stop the media from questioning him, adding that community leaders would answer the questions. Because the son is just a boy.

As outrage over Kanhaiya Lal’s killing, stone-pelting occurred briefly today during a protest march by hundreds of people in Udaipur. The riot police swung into action to control the crowd.

Tailor Lal was killed on Tuesday by two men, who posted videos online saying they were avenging the insult to Islam. The incident led to sporadic incidents of violence in Udaipur and curfew was imposed in seven police station areas of the city.

Lal’s last rites were performed on Wednesday in the presence of a large number of people. Heavy police force has been deployed in Udaipur to maintain law and order and two Additional Director Generals, a Deputy Inspector General and other senior officers are camping in the city to monitor the situation, officials said.

Thousands of people took part in a protest rally here on Thursday to protest against the horrific murder of Lal. The ‘Sarva Hindu Samaj’ rally was called by the Hindu organizations and was organized peacefully from the Town Hall to the Collectorate with the permission of the District Administration.
