Guwahati: Three minor boys drowned in the Brahmaputra river in Guwahati, while one is still missing.
The four youths have been identified as Dayal Sheikh, Jeet Das, Deep Sarkar and Avinash Das. He was a student of class tenth.
RK Hazarika, Officer-in-Charge Pandu River Police said the bodies of Dayal, Jeet and Deep have been found. “A rescue operation was carried out by teams of SDRF and river police. The search operation has been called off due to darkness. The rescue operation for the missing boy will resume on Monday morning. Police have recovered school bags, their clothes and mobile phones from the banks of the river.
After finishing the tuition class in Kamakhya Gate area, the youth went to take a dip in the river at Pandu around 8 am.
Jeet Das’s father Shankar Das said, “I got a call from a local resident around 10.30 am. The man called me using my son’s mobile phone which was on the bank of the river. He said the youths were missing for a long time but their belongings were lying in the bank.
Locals alleged that the concerned authorities have not put up any signage board at the place despite repeated appeals. “Several similar incidents had happened in the same place earlier also. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen any signage boards here. The river police post is only a few kilometers ahead, but we do not see any river police patrolling here,” said one of the residents.
