Guru Purnima 2021: Significance, Worship Method and Inspirational Quotes by Gautam Buddha

Teachers and guides have always been given utmost importance in Indian culture and traditions. To celebrate them, Hindus in India dedicate a special day and pay homage to teachers or gurus. According to Hindu, the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon date (15th day) in the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) of the month of Ashadha.

On this day, students and disciples pay respect to their teachers or gurus. This year this day is being celebrated on Saturday 24th July. Shubh Muhurta will start from 10:43 am on 23rd July and will continue till 08:06 am on 24th July.

The auspicious day is also known as Vyasa Purnima as it marks the birth anniversary of Ved Vyas. He is believed to have written the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The day is also important for those who follow Buddhism, as they celebrate it in honor of Gautam Buddha. Buddhist followers celebrate this day in honor of the first sermon given by Buddha at Sarnath.

Those who continue to follow the Guru-Shishya tradition seek blessings from their Gurus on this day. Disciples touch the feet of their Guru and offer sweets. Some people also pay their respects to spiritual masters. Religious texts mention how gurus are placed above gods and even gods. It is said that under the guidance of a qualified Guru one can conquer the world. Many people are of the opinion that the path to God or the Supreme Power goes through the path shown by the Guru.

Many Hindu believers also visit the temple on the auspicious day and offer nariyal, sweets. Prayer is concluded by doing Mangal Aarti. Some devotees also observe Satya Narayan Vrat on this day and decorate the entrance of their homes with hangings of Tulsi, mango leaves and garlands. On the occasion of Purnima, Lord Vishnu is offered fruits, rice dishes, betel leaves, dry fruits and milk porridge.
