Guru Hargobind was also involved in promoting the teachings of Sikhism and sent his followers to various places in the country to spread the teachings and ideas of Guru Nanak.

Guru Hargobind Singh Jayanti: June 19 is the birth anniversary of the sixth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Hargobind Singh. Mata Ganga and Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Hargobind are credited with leading the militarization of the Sikh community. He stressed on the need to develop warrior spirit in the community due to the oppression of the Mughal rulers.

Guru Hargobind Singh always carried two swords representing the philosophy of “Miri-Piri”. The first sword Miri represented power while the Piri was a symbol of his spiritual prowess.

As his devotees and Sikhs remember him on his 427th birth anniversary, we take a look at some interesting facts about Guru Hargobind Singh:

  1. He was born in Wadali, Amritsar. After his father, Guru Arjan Singh was executed by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, Guru Hargobind took over as the sixth Guru of the Sikhs at the age of only 11.
  2. Guru Hargobind Singh was a skilled swordsman, horseman and wrestler.
  3. He mobilized an army named Sant Sipahi (Saint Soldier) to counter the persecution of the Sikh community by the Mughals.
  4. Apart from building the army, Guru Hargobind was also involved in promoting the teachings of Sikhism and sent his followers to various places in the country to spread the teachings and ideas of Guru Nanak.
  5. The Mughal Emperor Jahangir imprisoned Guru Hargobind for 12 years for his efforts to develop a strong army.
  6. Guru Hargobind built the Akal Takht – one of the five Takhts of Sikhism.
  7. He served as Guru for 37 years, 9 months and 3 days, the longest tenure among all the 10 Gurus.
  8. His army was successful in defeating the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan four times.
  9. Guru Hargobind Singh built Lohgarh Fort near Amritsar
  10. He died on March 3, 1544 at Kirtarpur in undivided Punjab.
  11. Before his death, Guru Hargobind Singh appointed his grandson Guru Har Rai as the heir to his legacy and the seventh guru in Sikhism.
