Sheriff Greg Capers of San Jacinto County, which is north of Houston, described a terrifying scene when officers went to the residence after receiving a call about “harassment” around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The local sheriff said Saturday that police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed five Hondurans, including an eight-year-old boy, at a Texas home.

US media reported that investigators believe the gunman was firing his AR-15-style gun into a neighboring yard when the victims told him to stop as they were trying to put a baby to sleep .

Sheriff Greg Capers of San Jacinto County, which is north of Houston, described a terrifying scene when officers went to the residence after receiving a call about “harassment” around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The victims, aged between eight and 40, were scattered through the front door into bedrooms inside the house, where two of them – both women – were found lying on top of two children who were survivors of the massacre.

“In my opinion, they were really trying to take care of the babies and keep them alive,” Capers told ABC’s Houston station KTRK.

All of the victims had been shot “from the neck up, almost execution style, basically in the head,” he said.

“Several other people were found in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. Three were hospitalized.

“The suspect was drinking, and he says, ‘I’ll do what I want to do in my front yard,'” the sheriff told KTRK.

“All the victims were from Honduras,” Capers told reporters. He said that 10 people were present in the house at that time.

Authorities said an arrest warrant had been issued for 39-year-old Francisco Oropeza, who has been charged with five counts of murder.

“We’ve got his Mexican consulate card,” Capers said, adding that a security system at the victim’s home “captured him walking up to the front door with a weapon.”

The sheriff’s office said on its Facebook page that the shooter is believed to have left the county, but nearby residents are urged to stay home.

The Texas killings appear to be the latest in a series of shootings triggered by normal conversation: a man accidentally knocking on the wrong door, a cheerleader accidentally getting into the wrong car, someone accidentally driving into the wrong driveway, a The ball is going to the neighbor’s house. Yardstick.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 170 mass shootings in the US so far this year — defined as one in which four or more people are injured or killed.
