Gujarat: Mild jolt in Kutch; 5th seismic activity in a month

The Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said the quake was recorded at 12.49 am with its epicenter one km west-southwest of Rapar in Kutch district at a depth of 12.2 km.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 struck Gujarat’s Kutch district on Sunday, but there was no report of any casualty or damage to property, officials said. Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said the tremors were recorded at 12:49 am with its epicenter one kilometer west-southwest of Rapar in Kutch district at a depth of 12.2 kilometres.

According to ISR data, this is the fifth earthquake of magnitude three or more in the district in the last one month. According to the ISR, the last four tremors were felt near Rapar, Dudhai and Lakhpat towns of the district.

According to a district administration official, there is no report of any casualty or damage to property. Kutch district is located in the seismic zone of very high risk and there are regular low intensity tremors/earthquakes.

On 26 January 2001, a severe earthquake hit the district, killing 13,800 people and injuring about 1.67 lakh people.
