Gujarat: 7 limbs of two brain-dead men were amputated. Surat News – Times of India

Surat: A 39-year-old farmer from Assam, a 13-year-old Vadodara child, a 29-year-old man – also from Vadodara – and a few others got a new lease of life thanks to organs donated by two brain dead patients of the south Gujarat on Friday.
The process of organ harvesting was started after the families of Virendra Dhadia and Zamana gondalia – Suffering brain haemorrhage due to sudden rise in blood pressure – agreed to the body donation after being contacted by DonateLife, an NGO working towards spreading awareness about organ donation.
Dedhia, 56, a resident of Amardham Cooperative Society in Valsad city, was taken to the hospital on September 14. After CT-scans confirmed that he had suffered a brain haemorrhage, he was shifted to Kiran Hospital in Surat, where doctors declared him. Brain-dead on September 17th.
After being informed by the doctors, DonateLife’s founding president Nilesh Mandlewala contacted Dedhia’s family members. They agreed to donate his liver, heart and two kidneys.
“We have to accept the bitter truth that my husband has passed away. His organs will save the lives of others, so we decided to donate them,” said Kasturben, Dedhia’s wife.
Gondaliya, a 40-year-old diamond polisher from Katargam, was admitted to the hospital on September 15. Two days later, he was declared brain-dead after a CT-scan revealed that he had suffered a brain haemorrhage.
“In 2012 both his kidneys failed and he needed a transplant. Our mother Dudhiben donated a kidney to him,” said Gondalia’s brother Bharat. The family is a resident of Vibhania village in Kalavad taluka of Jamnagar district.
“Earlier this year he again suffered kidney failure and was on dialysis. We understand the pain of those who are in need of organ donation. So, when we were told that my brother was brain-dead, we decided to donate his vital organs,” said Bharat. Gondalia’s liver and two corneas were cut.
The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) was alerted about the body donation after formal consent from the relatives of brain-dead patients.
Dedhia’s heart was transplanted as a farmer from Assam, who was suffering from heart problems since 2019. The transplant was done at MGM Hospital, Chennai. One of his kidneys was transplanted in a 13-year-old boy from Vadodara at IKDRC, Ahmedabad.
The second kidney was transplanted to a 29-year-old man from Vadodara at Kiran Hospital in Surat. This was the first cadaver kidney transplant in Surat. A 46-year-old patient from Bhiloda in Sabarkantha district donated liver by Dedhia, transplanted at CIMS Hospital, Ahmedabad.
Gondalia’s liver was transplanted into a 59-year-old man from Ahmedabad at Sims Hospital. His cornea was donated to Lok Drishti Eye Bank, Surat.
“Surat is now the leader in cadaver donation in the country. A total of 19 bodies were donated through DonateLife in the last 19 days,” Mandlewala told TOI.
