Filmmaker James Gunn has announced that filming has begun on the highly anticipated third installment of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series. Gunn is writing and directing “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3”, which has a release date of May 3, 2023. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Pom Clementieff are all returning for the threequel. Gunn, who most recently directed “The Suicide Squad” for Warner Bros., shared the news in a post on Monday, along with a photo with the cast.

He wrote, “It has been a strange and long and challenging journey at times to get here, but the obstacles along the way have made this moment all the more delightful. Set with my Guardian family for the first day of shooting Back on #Gotgvol3″ he wrote.

Pratt, who plays Peter Quill aka Star Lord in the franchise, also posted about starting work on the new film.

“First day in the can. Honestly couldn’t have started better. Get into the fray with a delicate, emotional, funny, wild, complex scene running and absolutely slaying everyone.” Crazy genius by my friend and brother Thank you for making me a puppet @jamesgunn oh my god I promise you. This movie will be worth the wait. #Gotgvol3″ the actor wrote on Instagram.

Gunn has made two films in the series so far, starting with “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014 and its 2017 sequel “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2”.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3” will also feature Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, a character first teased in “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2”. Marvel Studios is producing the film.

Earlier, speaking about the film, director James Gunn said that he plans to “wrap up” the stories introduced in “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1” with the upcoming third installment in the franchise.

“If everything goes according to plan it will complete the stories I started in Guardian 1,” Gunn wrote on Instagram in response to a fan’s question about the much-anticipated Marvel Studios project.
